Not to be upstaged by Duluth, MN or Topeka, KS, our city should pull out some cans of paint, and start transforming the streets. Better yet, let’s rename Longmont’s Main Street. How about Google Boulevard?
Even better, let’s paint the ground over the existing fiber optic cable so Google can spot it from satellite.
All area golf courses can pitch in and mow their lawns in the letters G-o-o-g-l-e.
What’s all this about?
Google wants to deliver the ultimate in broadband – fiber optic cable – to households. It will test market fiber optic delivery in a handful of cities around the country sometime after March 26. City officials here in Longmont already are urging residents to nominate their city for fiber before March 26. Go to this site and vote, if you want fiber optic broadband here: www.google.com/appserve/fiberrfi/public/options
Well, it turns out Longmont has a head start on fiber optic cable.
There is 17 miles of fiber-optic line that loops around the city and can deliver high-speed telecommunications into every home and business in Longmont. (Wow!)
In fact, that was the plan when the city installed it. Already, the city has conduit running behind 1,184 homes in Creekside and part of Southmoor Park just waiting to be filled with fiber-optic cable, and there are 67 houses in Rainbow Ridge Estates with a fiber-to-the-home system already installed.
Fiber optic would be great! I could watch Avatar when it comes available while downloading Hurt Locker and keep my eye on cable news channel streams.
How does fiber compare with existing broadband? I’m no expert, but it’s like the difference between the Mississippi River and your kitchen sink tap.
So, let’s get busy with those paint brushes and lawn mowers. Color me in the Google rainbow of colors.

Fun website. You need to present Longmont’s case, too!
